Scrub Jays stock their pantry

Sunday November 19, 2023  I’ve always loved feeding the birds, well except magpies and that is a story for another day. Because our year round creek offers water, the tall trees offer shelter, and the lady of the house keeps the feeders filled, we do have a lot of feathered friends. The Western Scrub Jay is a smart rascal who knows to store food for the winter. They will hide thousands of pine nuts or acorns and some how they know where everyone is. I decided to add some unsalted peanuts to their stash for the upcoming winter. I put a bowl of peanuts out on the front porch and when i came back to check it was empty!! In less that an hour! And I never saw a bird. Time for Plan B. I set up my trail cam and refilled the bowl. The results are below. One magpie did show up, and in the end a little chickadee came to make sure there were no crumbs left. The porch lights are on a timer and that is why they are on at the end of the video. Since I didn’t buy hay this year I guess I’ll invest in peanuts.

Have a good Sunday and thank for checking in.

Happy Sunday! Thank you for this video. I can sit and watch this all day, actually, I did do that sometimes all day when I lived up in Timber Lakes 💜💜

Lovely! I am sitting outside enjoying the birds at my feeders. Most of the time I have no idea what they are, I just savor the moment!
