All’s well

Thursday, February 23, 2023  We made it through another challenging day of winter 2023. Farmer Ed shoveled so many paths to make it safe for me to get to the animals and I’m very grateful for him. He did an amazing job for an old fart!  I received messages all day from people concerned about the animals and especially the dogs. Not to worry, the dogs are great. They love this weather.  I also baked them homemade doggie treats yesterday and I think they were pretty pleased about that.  They get warm broth on their meals and are happy to be protecting the herd. When I checked the cams this morning I saw them both sleeping and decided to share that photo below.  The alpacas would prefer to be wandering and nibbling on green grass I’m sure but they have adapted to barn life better than you might think. I’ve always said the number one thing an alpaca needs is to feel safe. With their friends all around them they do feel safe. Food and water is always available and they know this doesn’t last forever.  Stay safe, stay warm. Have a good Thursday.

Photo of the day:  Pups this morning sleeping soundly.

These trees look like Farmer Ed and I feel.

Fencing almost gone!

Those dogs look pretty comfy. We got a storm overnight but thankfully it didn’t give us as much snow as predicted. Thank goodness. Farmer Ed doesn’t have a snowblower? Dick snowblowed my paths for me down at ‘the small barn’ and also the dog yard for the big puppy. They said we could get a foot, but we only got about 4 or 5 inches. On top of the foot of old crappy snow we have on the ground. Fine with me. At least the new stuff is beautiful. More like the nice stuff you guys get. 🙂

Oh yes Farmer Ed has a nice snowblower, but no way to get it inside the gates which froze under too much ice and snow when I was dealing with my injured hand. He does use it to clear the driveway and that is helpful! In previous years we’ve used it to clear paths and it’s great. We could spend time getting that gate open I suppose but for now it’s keeping the dogs where we need them to stay so we’re using shovels in the pasture areas and feeling grateful we’re not chasing dogs. Enjoy your pretty new snow!

Meanwhile in Indianapolis: yesterday we had a bit of rain and temps reached a record 71º! Today it won’t get quite that warm, reaching a high of 66º, but it is beautiful and clear! I’ll leave that snow to you snow pros!
