Just doin’ her job

Sunday, October 2, 2022  She was just doing her job, I told myself.  Yesterday afternoon, the girls stated doing their alarm call in the middle of the main pasture. The dogs immediately ran to see what had the herd upset. Both Blue and Juno started chasing some creature and Juno reached it before Blue did.  She pounced on it, grabbed it and shook it til it died. (this is what a good guardian will do with any uninvited guest) I still couldn’t tell what it was but Juno had something rather large in her mouth and was bringing it to the barn yard.  Blue watched and knew that she had done a good job and was entitled to eat what she killed.  Hey, they made the rules, not me.  As she sat down to examine her kill I followed for closer inspection.  It was a large possum.  It’s tail was the size of a garden hose.  You might want to stop reading now if you’re a little squeamish.    She ate the whole thing!  eeeeww  Blue watched from a distance and I think has new respect for his partner. The magpies were waiting to clean up any leftovers but I really don’t think she left them any.  She had eaten a hue raw meal a few hours earlier so I didn’t think she was than hungry, but eeeewwwww.  Also, because the dogs eat raw food including bones and organs this “treat” was probably very similar to what she digests every day. I did get photos of the event but I’ll spare you the visual details and just include a photo of the girl who was just doing her job.

Thanks Gigi. She really does a great job for as young as she is! I can’t wait to see how she matures.

Don’t mess with Juno! She is an amazing guardian! I was curious to learn more about possums so I Googled it. Apparently they are a very clean animal. That made me feel better! *smile*

I had to do a little research too. It seem possums have a lower body temp that keep them “clean” I feel bad for the little creature but it’s just the way things have to be to keep the alpaca safe. 🙁
