New Yarn!

Thursday, September 8, 2022  As expected we have a new shipment of yarn and I couldn’t be more pleased!*  I put about half of it into skeins last night and that is what you see in the photo below.  I like my yarn on the chunky side because I think it’s perfect for quick knit projects like hats mittens and scarves. This is the yarn I’ll use to make the hats I sell every year in our store. The white one is Rocky, the light fawn is Ryder, he provided the fleece I was skirting in the video I posted on August 23. And the multi color is Romulus spun with Mojo. I think any of these will go great together!  And they are softer than you can imagine. They’ll be in the online store in a few days once I label them and you will be able to see for yourself. Happy Thursday!

*The normal turn around time for this mill is 6 – 8 months. I get special preferred customer treatment because I have been sending in many many fleeces every year for more than 20 years, we are good friends, I am sure to only send in the best fleeces and I skirt them well. I’ve seen some of the bags of garbage that alpaca owners send in and it’s sad. I’m sure they just don’t know better but please learn to evaluate a fleece and skirt it properly if you want good stuff back.

Photo of the Day: Thanks to the alpaca boys and my processor Spinderella for this beautiful yarn.

That’s lovely! I just want to squish it! Our mill owner has also showed us some of what she receives and laments that some folks don’t know what should and shouldn’t be used for yarn. Our New England Fiber Pool has also told me they appreciate that I skirt, though the fleeces I send to them are not top grade due to my aging herd, but they still have products for the grade they end up being.

Exactly Lana. Just because it’s alpaca doesn’t mean it should be used for yarn. It’s a learning curve.

Shearing day skirting helps too, but if I sent in fleeces without the next step of my skirting, I’d get lousy yarn back. Much more has to come out, but there just isn’t time for that on shearing day. What really helps is the way it is wrapped so that I can find all the edges.
