It’s over?

Thursday July 14,2022  One of our visitors last week said to me “I bet you’re so glad the pandemic is over!”  Ummm, honey, it ain’t over yet!   I understand about 8 out of 10 Americans have had a covid infection, (and probably feel safe) but I am not one of them and I hope to keep that status as long as I can. I’m also aware of people being reinfected at an alarming rate. Closer to home, we had a top soil delivery last week and the guy said he just lost his mom to Covid.  So no, it is not over. Yes of course we are weary of masking and avoiding crowds but I’ll keep playing it safe because I can. I also understand that if I do get covid it probably won’t kill me but I really don’t like being sick and there are ZERO sick days that come with my job.

From our Local news yesterday:  “Not only is the COVID-19 pandemic not over, but the spread of the virus continues to be a global public health emergency.

That’s the finding of the World Health Organization, which heard last week the number of coronavirus cases reported went up 30% in the last two weeks as new versions of the omicron variant of the virus sweep across the globe and mitigation measures are being set aside.

“There is a major disconnect in COVID-19 risk perception between scientific communities, political leaders and the general public,” WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said Tuesday, The New York Times reported. “COVID-19 is nowhere near over.”

The WHO first declared the coronavirus a “public health emergency of international concern” on Jan. 30, 2020, nearly two months before the agency of the United Nations labeled the outbreak of the virus first seen in China a pandemic.

Data compiled by The New York Times shows that worldwide, new COVID-19 cases have climbed to a daily average of nearly 900,000 as of Wednesday, while the daily average of deaths from the virus is at 1,685, a 12% increase over the past 14 days.

The omicron subvariant known as BA.5, behind Europe’s status as the hot spot internationally for the virus, is now the dominant strain in the United States, including in Utah. BA.5 is considered much more highly transmissible than the original omicron, able to evade immunity from vaccinations and even recent infections.”

Be careful out there my friends.

I was just reading about BA 5 variant from a Dr in our very respected Dartmouth Hitchcock Hospital. You are certainly correct that ‘it ain’t over’. This version does indeed infect the prior infected people and people who had their boosters a long time ago. I’m like you and haven’t gotten Covid and remain careful. We go to summer theatre with friends every other week and they require masks and I was very happy to see everyone complying. We are all so tired of it, so I understand how easy it is to say it is over. sigh. I just ordered more KN95s…
