Babies?

Wednesday, June 29, 2022  Visitors often ask when the babies will be arriving this year. Sorry my friends, none for us this year. We have had hundreds of births here and it is definitely the most intense, exciting, wonder filled time of the year. It also demands my full attention if I want things to go well. As farms around the country are popping out crias I’m rather enjoying my freedom this year. I’m also keenly aware of several farms who have had birthing tragedies and that is part of the business of birthing.  A friend lost a cria and mom because of a difficult presentation.  😢 We might decide to have a few babies in the future but for now I’m enjoying our alpaca family just as it is.  And it’s perfect. Happy Wednesday!

Photo of the Day:  I do miss those adorable babies and their antics.

I miss the crias too, but not the stress around their births. It was very hard to lose one and to see the mother grieve. I still have a lot of kittens born each, but their mothers generally have enough other kittens to not really notice if one passes. I’m very fortunate not to have lost very many over 22 years of breeding. So now I enjoy the pictures of crias from other farms. Thanks for posting that adorable picture.

The stress is real, isn’t it. And those of us who have stepped into the breeding realm understand how tough it can be. My vet has occasionally called me on birth issues, because she says I’ve had more babies than anyone else she knows. lol
