Black Gold

Tuesday, April 5, 2022  My Kubota tractor is not very big and I am not a “spring chicken”, but together we got most of the winter bedding out of the barn yesterday.  Whew. It served it’s purpose to make cozy bedding for the animals all winter and now it will help plants flowers and pastures grow.  The ratio of hay to beans is perfect for compost and it will probably start steaming as it cooks down. I love that smell!  It’s like earthy tobacco and it doesn’t stink at all.  It’s snowing here this morning and that little bit of extra moisture will help it start to cook faster.  yay!   I used some of one of our older piles to fill in some low spots for the Kubota tracks yesterday and it looked like fine black dirt. Farm magic is what I call it!  I’ll eventually move this pile to the north pasture where it will finish cooking but for now I’ll just admire my gorgeous pile of black gold.  Happy Tuesday!

Photo of the Day:  This is some really good $#!t!

I love how it ends up like black loam after it ‘cooks’. Dick sells some of ours after it winters over. All the buyers love it. The rest of it gets spread over our pastures once it has turned into loam. Kudos to you, driving the tractor and using the bucket! Our land is so hilly, only Dick does the tractor work here. The tippy feeling was too much for me. He’s learned all the tricks to keep it from rolling, thank goodness.

I’m super cautious about tipping Lana, and I go as slowly and carefully as I have to. But I’ve been doing the spring clean out myself for so many years now I have my method down. I can get that bucket about an inch from exactly where I need it. Now let the cooking begin!
