Livestock Guardian Dogs

Tuesday, March 22, 2022  To watch a livestock guardian work is really amazing, but to watch them teach and communicate with one another is almost magic.  When Blue arrived 2 years ago this month, we expected Charlotte would take him under her wing, but actually Chief did most of the teaching. Charlotte loved him, but Chief taught him.  When we had the 3 of them all working Chief would decided where they worked and who had a night off. I don’t know exactly how he did this but he did. Now Blue is teaching Juno and they are such a great pair. He is definitely in charge at the moment but sometimes I wonder if that might not change in the future. Juno has a very strong personality. Whatever, I am so grateful we have these two beautiful white pups in charge of security at Blue Moon Ranch. Happy Tuesday.

Photos of the Day: I’m the one in charge, right mom?

Blue teaches Juno how to respond when the human is calling you to look at the camera.   lol

Two years ago in March of 2020 Blue was learning the ropes from Chief.  Now he’s Juno’s teacher and I still miss Chief.

We had 2 adult males & added another male pup (succession planning). Rudy, the oldest, always took point during a perceived threat. Little Rowdy always wanted to get up front to see the action. Old Rudy would snarl and bark at him and Rowdy fell back to take a flank position around the herd. He learned quickly. With the other two gone (old age), Rowdy is his own boss. Looking for a new recruit (puppy) to keep him company and share the chores. Gotta love them ❤️
