What to do about Benjamin?

Thursday, February 10, 2022  Our 2021 birthing season was a good one.  First born was little Benjamin, son of Ava and Stetson. In all honesty I always prefer females, but when I see a cute healthy baby boy of course I am grateful. And then I start to think I hope we have another boy because eventually we have to move the boy away from the females and it’s so much easier when he has a buddy. But our next two births were Ruthie and Raina, daughters of Aspen and Ciara, sired by our Romulus. Of course I was thrilled they were and are stunning little females. But what to do about Benjamin? At this time Benjamin is mostly concerned with eating, and sleeping beside his mama. But one of these days he will probably realize he is a boy surrounded by all these beautiful girls.  lol  There is no way I will toss him in with the big boys, and for now we’re taking it one day at a time. As long as he’s mostly concerned with food he can stay with the girls. I do watch them closely and I’ll know if he’s having big boy thoughts. I usually leave the little boys stay with their moms until they’re about a year old anyway. So we have until later this summer to really come up with a plan. No worries Benji, we’ll take good care of you!

We had the same trouble a couple of times when we only had one boy. We also left the boy with Mama til around a year old. We always wished we had a gelding or two to put the little ones with. The adult males can be pretty awful to the young boys. Any farms near you who could lend you a couple yearling boys when the time comes? He really has the sweetest face!

I do have several geldings who might work as companions for Benji. It’s just that our boys’ barn is much easier for me to manage when they are all together. But I’ll do what I have to to keep him safe. I also considered selling him but his fleece is gorgeous! It’s almost pink even though he appears white on the outside. I’m hoping he is a slow to mature boy and will get some size on him before I have to make the move. Fingers crossed!
