Winter bedding

Friday, January 21, 2022   We got a dusting of snow overnight and that will be enough to stabilize the walking paths for today.  We’re building up a nice layer of composting beans and stemmy hay inside the girls barn and I plan to make it even better today by leveling out the lumps and adding more stems to the top layer.  It’s called deep compost bedding or deep litter bedding and it makes the best use of animal waste in the winter months. There is simply no way I could continue with keeping the barn floor clean in the winter – and why would I even want to – to expose cold concrete? So we let the beans fall where they may and use the stemmy leftover hay that our alpacas prefer not to eat to cover it in layers. Voilà – soft warm bedding! It is a pain in the spring when I have to clear it all out, but it works beautifully for the winter months.  Happy Friday!
