How long do alpacas live?

Wednesday, September 8, 2021 One of the questions I’m asked most often on tours is “How long do they live?”  I consider late teens to be old age and if they make it to 20, we’re really lucky. But then I point out Queen Ester who was born in 1997 and that makes her 24 years old. She’s actually doing quite well for her age, she’s still chewing her cud, which means her teeth are OK, and she keeps up with the herd most days. She does love her naps, still has a good appetite and I hope she’ll stick around with us for a while longer.  Godiva is one of her daughters and I love that she is here with her mom as she enjoys retirement at Blue Moon.

It was 40° here this morning and Blue was about as happy as I’ve ever seen him. Running in circles and begging anyone nearby to play with him. That boy loves cold weather! He’ll be very happy in a few months.  lol

She looks great! We have one that just turned 20, but he looks his age. Maybe lady alpacas wear their age better. lol
