Organic Yarn

Sunday, August 22, 2021 I think of our place as an organic operation. What does that mean?  I haven’t nor will I pay for a federal certification to use the organic label, but we actually are in total compliance. Definition of organic: produced or involving production without the use of chemical fertilizers, pesticides, or other artificial agents. I clearly remember the day when we saw too many foxtails growing in one of the lesser used pastures and I called out the county extension agent. His advice: “Use Round up”. Of course I refused and he laughed at me.  And this was probably 17 years ago. Now some research suggests that exposure to the active ingredient in Roundup, glyphosate, may double the overall risk of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma and triple the risk of B-cell lymphomas. It’s also recently been investigated as possible contributing factor in Parkinson disease. Whether you believe the studies or not, glyphosates are nothing I want near my animals or my family.  We fertilize our pasture with the magical stuff that comes out the other end of the alpaca and I like it that way. What made me think of this today?  It’s a weed pulling day! After all the recent rains it the time to attack the thistles and other pesky weeds that the alpacas won’t eat. And it will all be done by hand by the two senior citizens who live here. And that is why I call my yarn organic!  Happy Sunday!

Photo of the day:  This is Marcella’s 2021 organic fleece all spun and ready for labels.  It will be in the store soon.
