Taking care of babies

Thursday, July 22, 2021 Both babies are gaining weight, Yay!  Bottle feeding baby alpacas might sound like fun, but trust me it’s not. It’s been too hot for them to do much running yet but I have no doubts they will soon. The first 3 days of a cria’s life are very critical. They can’t regulate their own body temp so we need to watch for any extremes. I am always moving them out of the sun and into shade. Lucky for them it’s been warm enough at night that they certainly don’t need coats. People ask, “Well what happens in the wild?” My answer: #1, Alpacas have always been domesticated, so they do not have exactly a history of being in the wild. And #2 Sadly, they die. In South America it is not uncommon for then to lose 50% of the crias born each year.” That’s what those cute fuzzy alpaca teddy bears are made from, cria pelts. I had to stop carrying them once I figured that one out. But anyway, I do watch them like a helicopter mom until they are at least a week old, and then some. 😁  Ciara was humming quite a bit yesterday and I was ready for baby #3, but she settled down last night so the wait continues.  Happy Thursday!

So cute! They make me smile. Blue is all over guard-dogging HIS new babies.

So far Blue seems to understand that being a guardian does not involve playing with them, but we’re watching him closely because he’s still pretty young. fingers crossed!
