Plant Medicine

Saturday, June 12, 2021 Do you think animals will self medicate if given the choice? I do. The alpacas love plantain, common mallow and mint (which all have medicinal properties) and they seem to know which ones they need to eat at any given time. They do avoid some weeds and I generally trust them to know what not to eat.  The other reason I can trust them is that our pasture grass is quite abundant and that is their primary diet. We are fortunate to have many herbs growing wild in the pastures too.  Disclaimer: Alpaca will eat plants that can kill them if they are hungry enough. Know your plants and remove any that are toxic.

Temps are climbing in to the upper 80’s today. We’ll be spending most of the day  in the shade of the barn with both fans blowing. Gotta stay cool!  We’re still on the shearing schedule for June 19. One week to go. Fingers crossed. Happy Saturday.

Photo of the Day: Delilah nibbles at our Hawthorn Tree which has leaves and flowers that are excellent for the heart. Does she know?

So true Kathie. We’re fortunate that we live in this old river bed and much of the ground still has water flowing under it.

Yes, I absolutely do believe animals will self-medicate if given the chance. Our ancestors did also and especially those who loved and cared for Mother Nature as the Indigenous people did.
