Redwing Black Birds 🎶

posted in: Uncategorized | 3

Saturday February 8, 2020  The redwing black birds have started singing and telling us will soon be spring. It’s always a welcome sound that starts in February and goes on for most of spring. They appreciate the water in the creek, the tall cottonwood trees for roosting and the all you can eat buffet of sunflower seeds that I put out for them. The red is just starting to appear on the wings of the males and soon it will be brilliant as they search for a mate. You might see a few at the feeder or in the trees over the creek if you are coming to visit us for our midwinter Open Barn Day. Happy Saturday!

Photo of the day: They are a little early this year but I do love their singing.

I have seen red-winged blackbirds at my feeders this year. I don’t remember ever seeing them in an urban setting. Usually a cornfield or along a highway. They, the Eastern Bluebirds, and the Northern Flickers have been welcome surprises this winter at my feeders along with my regular visitors of Cardinals, sparrows, goldfinches and various woodpeckers. I even love the Starlings. They are so funny and entertaining!
