Learning the dance

Thursday August 29, 2019  When a newborn alpaca and it’s mom are learning the nursing routine it’s like learning to dance with a new partner. Each has to learn the movements of the other and it sometimes takes a few days before they dance like pros. But when they get it, it’s so good. Remy had a little set back during our Open Barn event, but now he’s dancing like a pro with Ava. He’s up to 16.4 pounds (from 12.4, that is huge!) and last night he led the baby races and was faster than the big boys! Way to go Remy!

A bit of history: We sold Ava a few years ago but before she left, she had a little baby boy about the same size as Remy. It was her first baby, she was a bit confused and didn’t bond with him right away. They never learned the nursing dance very well either, and we had to supplement him with a bottle. Sad ending – he died at a few weeks old and we never could get him above 14 pounds. So of course all this has been in my mind and I’m so happy that Remy and Ava are very bonded and that he is gaining so well.  <whew>  Ava came back to us a few years ago and she was very happy to be reunited with many of her family members. All’s well that ends well. 🙂
