Monday, November 4, 2024. I’m dealing with a bit of election eve anxiety so today I did something I’ve been putting off for a while. I’m changing my phone number! My previous number tied me to Utah and was used for the business at Blue Moon Ranch. As I’m wriggling into a new suit here, it seems a good time to make the change. New state, new home, new me. Also, I love change! Farmer Ed hates it but that is what keeps things interesting around here. ha
Of course I will let my friends and family know what the new number is as soon as it’s finalized. If you happen to think I might not include you in that list and you need to know my new number please send me an email. In addition, you can always comment on any blog post and I will get your message that way.
Halloween in our new neighborhood was as quiet as it had been in Woodland. That’s OK, it’s not like we need extra bags of snickers lying around here anyway. But the Dia de los Muertos celebrations were big. Nov 1 and 2 is when our local culture sets up “ofrendas” with photos of deceased loved ones and offerings of food and drinks that they loved. It draws on pre-Hispanic Mexican and Spanish Roman Catholic traditions intended to facilitate the return of departed souls to the Earth. Ropes of marigolds (flower of the dead) hang everywhere and although the mood is a bit solemn, I was the only one I saw with tears in my eyes as we walked around the square of old town Albuquerque. I’m too much an empath not to feel all the feelings. 🥲 I talked to a neighbor and she said, “oh we just get used to it. It happens every year and it’s how we remember them.”
I feel fortunate to be able to experience all these new things as we continue to learn about our new home state. And….I think I can safely say we are unpacked. Two months ago today we arrived and now since we’ve declared the unpacking phase done, we can really start some exploring. I’m also excited to start knitting some hats and enjoying my indoor fiber studio. See pic below.
Remember to vote on the 5th and encourage a friend to vote too. Registering to vote was one of the first things we did after moving to New Mexico. Because we are a border state all legal things like voting, car registration etc. are a little more complicated but we did it and we were even able to vote by mail. Please don’t sit this one out.
Thanks as always for checking in. I do appreciate you!
Photos of the day: The back yard today – it has been raining and dreary, but the colors here are wonderful!
My favorite cottonwood in our front yard is getting ready to drop her leaves. The dark green in the lower right is Rosemary! So fragrant and healthy. I’ll be using this herb in my dolls for sure.
The ofrendas seem a rather personal thing to have on display for the public, but as I said I’m still learning. Many people were taking photos so I decided it must be OK.
Indoor fiber studio! I have so much crammed in this room, including two XL dog crates, but it works. Still need to get my art on the walls, but that will happen. Let there be spinning and felting and knitting!
We enjoyed our first fire of the season while we figured out how to turn the heat on! There are 3 different systems and it wasn’t as easy as you might think. So we went primitive for 24 hours. lol We’re all set now. And it was still nice enough that I was in the pool last weekend. perfect!
KATHIE CARPENTER
Oh my goodness we are in Texas now and are getting in the same boat!!! But we probably won’t change anything until we get to our final destination in Virginia.
Hope you are enjoying retirement!

Hi Kathie! Yes, finally feeling retired and loving it. #grateful I really didn’t need to change my phone number, but I still get business calls and I think I’ll like having a 505 area code. New Mexico proud! 😁 Hope you love Virginia!
