Storm clouds and yellow flowers

Wednesday, May 24, 2023  Afternoon rain showers have been keeping things so green here!  And the dandelions are blooming everywhere. Food for the bees, food for the alpacas and they even improve the soil. Do you know how wonderful dandelions are? It pains me to think that most people try to eradicate them. They are packed full of vitamins minerals and other nutrients. They provide a liver cleanse and are a very rich source of beta-carotene which we convert into vitamin A. They are also rich in vitamin C, fiber, potassium, iron, calcium, magnesium, zinc, and phosphorus. It’s a good way to get B complex vitamins, trace minerals, organic sodium, and even some vitamin D. Our alpacas instinctively know this and it’s the first thing they look for to eat when they go into a new area.  Smart! Since we haven’t used weed killer here it’s very safe for them to eat all the dandelions we have. I hope you will enjoy their beauty this season and maybe have a dandelion salad!  Happy Wednesday!

Yum.

We have a ton of them all around our house and some in the pasture. I have never noticed the alpacas eating them, but then, they aren’t yet on the field that has the most. We follow Maine’s “No Mow May” campaign so the bees can enjoy the dandis. Ours are getting to fluff stage now, so we’ll be mowing the lawns soon. They make everything so bright! (We live on the Maine line, so feel like we’re part of that state too.)

That’s wonderful Lana. Most of my neighbors here spray to get rid of them. 😟 No Mow May is a great idea!
