Sunday, May 21, 2023 Way back 25 years ago when we first had our alpacas I had no idea how to move them. We kept them in the barn way too much because I was afraid I’d never get them back in. lol We didn’t have our guardian dogs yet so I did need to keep them in the barn at night. By watching them move and learning from my mistakes I eventually figured it out. Tip #1 Keep the herd together, so you must position yourself behind the last alpaca you want to move. Tip #2 Move slowly, if you chase them like a predator would, they will run far away from you. Tip #3 Stop moving if they are bunched up getting through a small opening like a gate. If you try to force them through by moving too close, one or two will bolt and find a way around you. Moving a group is much easier than moving one! The gentle boy can move any herd easily and with no stress. You can watch him get the girls out of the creek pasture in the video below. Happy Sunday!
