Tuesday, January 31, 2023 OK let’s hope that was the last cold night for a while. It’s 15° below zero here as I type. Brrrr. Of course we’re fine in the house, but at least half of my heart resides out with the animals. I’ll be out there soon to check on them all but from what I can see on the cams, all is well. Several of the girls stayed out of the barn under their overhang, but all the boys stayed inside. Smart boys. The sun is shining brightly now and will warm* things up nicely. (*warm is a relative term now, anything above zero can be considered warm!) When they all stay in one place together, their bodies and breathing make quite a difference.
I know there are farms who allow their guardian dogs to sleep indoors on nights like this but there was something on the other side of the fence last night that had both Blue and Juno barking up a storm, and we really need them to do that. Because of the extreme amount of snow, many predators are coming to lower elevations seeking food. And we do not want that food to be an alpaca! Not to mention the fact that Blue and Banjo cannot even look at each other without growling and worse. I really think the guardian dogs were fine last night and now they’re both in the barn with most of the alpacas. Stay warm – and have a good Tuesday.
Photo of the day: It looks like Juno got the top bunk last night.

Brrr! We are getting a polar vortex on Friday and Saturday, with temps at minus 17! I worry about the alpacas too, especially since they are forecasting winds to go with it. Luckily we have a hill to our west that blocks the worst. When we had a guardian dog, I worried about him, but he wasn’t fazed at all by cold. Juno and Blue look pretty comfy cuddled up with all the hay! We’ve been spoiled by mild weather this winter and last, so we’re not used to that kind of cold any more. Only 2 days of it thank goodness.

Well we worry because we care, right? I hope your cold spell is not too bad!
