Saturday, January 21, 2023 A public service announcement to all my alpaca friends, especially those newer to the game. Get your shearer booked now! Most shearers will be finalizing their schedules this month and the longer you wait the harder it will be to get on that schedule. Some people worry about alpacas handling cold weather, but it’s the heat that’s more likely to kill them. They need to give us that fabulous fleece before summer heat sets it. Every year I get calls right after we have our first 90 degree day asking “who can shear my alpacas?” Every year. Hey I can procrastinate as well as anybody not on scheduling shearing day! We got on our shearers schedule for 2023 in December of 2022. Ask larger farms around you who they use and make some calls today. Happy Saturday!

Great reminder! We switched shearers this past year so we could get them done in a more timely manner. End of June was just too late! Though we were happy with the job the previous shearer did, he does so many huge farms that small ones like us come last. Now we have a shearer who specifically services small farms. He has only one helper, but they still did it faster that what we did when we were shearing our own! You are absolutely right about the heat being the dangerous thing for them!
