Monday, September 26, 2022 We decided to take a drive up the road a bit to see if the fall colors were any brighter. Actually they weren’t! We did see some color, (photo#1) but over all I think we have a couple of weeks before the colors peak. But we did find a beautiful flock of sheep free ranging on the mountain. There were hundreds and hundreds of them and as they quietly grazed, they almost looked like rocks but closer inspection revealed the rocks were moving. ha. Soon the shepherds will start bringing them down to lower elevations for the winter and sometimes we see them go right down our road. Anyway, I knew there would be livestock guardian dogs with these sheep and strained my eyes to see them, and just then a big burly dog came walking toward us down the road. He stared right at us in the car and oozed with confidence – move along he said and we listened! I noticed the livestock tag in his ear and it reminded me of our rescue dog Chief, who came from a similar environment with a tag in his ear until we removed it and gave him a job and a home. (I still miss that dog) But it was a good Sunday drive and I have some photos to share with you today. Happy Monday!
Photos of the Day: Fall colors are starting to appear.
Rocks? Or sheep? I bet there is a dog or two hiding in there somewhere.
All in all a very healthy looking flock.
This one wore a bell and it sounded so sweet!
This dog was so intimidating in the way he approached our car. Talk about confidence. Just keep moving he said and there won’t be any trouble. We moved.

Wow, that dog looks like our first livestock guardian, Biff, who was an Akbash. He had that same quiet confidence when people approached him that he didn’t know. In that picture of all the sheep at a distance, I thought I saw an LGD in the middle. Unless the sheep are starting to have Pyr-like heads! lol
Great pics!

I’ll have to look for the dog in that one photo. It makes sense that there must be more than one dog with them. The head of the big dog sure doesn’t look like a Pyrenees or Maremma but he was definitely the guardian of those sheep! I agree with Akbash, or maybe a mix.

Such a fun outing! Always something worth seeing. Thanks for the photos and your thoughts! That guardian dog looks all business!

Thanks Brenda, he was! As we approached him Ed said quietly, let’s roll up the windows. That dog didn’t need to do anything but stare at us to get his message across.
