Grateful for the grass

Wednesday, August 17, 2022   Before we moved to Woodland in 2003, we had our herd of alpacas on a 5 acre parcel in Herriman, in Salt Lake County.  Or “down in the valley” as they say.  It was OK, but dry as could be and I could not get grass to grow there no matter how hard I tried. As the population density increased in that area and our youngest went off to college, I began the search for property with grass.  I was obsessed! I know there are many alpaca farms who feed only hay year round and it works for them but I wanted to find grass pastures. And I did. 😁 No it wasn’t easy, and one one of us (who shall remain nameless) didn’t want to move at all. But we did move 54 alpacas, 2 cats, 4 dogs and a flock of chickens to Woodland to enjoy the cool mountain air and grass pastures!  Oh, we did have to build the house and the barns but we had grass from day 1 and ever since. And every day I see the herd grazing I’m filled with joy.  Happy Wednesday!

I feel like that about grass pasture too. When we first bought our farm, the pastures that were here 20 or more years earlier had grown in with trees. But we were able to clear back to the original stone walls and grass came back (with help from Dick). It is so awesome to see them out grazing. Your pastures are huge! And so green. Ours are ‘moderate’ drought stricken right now, but rain is on the way. Yay.

Thanks for sharing that Lana. What lucky alpacas we both have! Fingers crossed for rain for both our farms.
