Thursday, February 3, 2022 Temps of 5 below zero didn’t stop our dogs from patrolling last night. As it should be. Juno’s coat is getting thicker by the day and she shows no signs of being cold at all. Makes me wonder how she’s going to handle summer! Both dogs look like little polar bears out there and are thriving in their jobs. You might think i overreact to the predator threat here, so I’ll tell you a little story. Once we sold a few alpacas to some friends who lived nearby. I cautioned them they would need predator proof fencing or a livestock guardian dog to keep their little herd safe. They assured me they would work on it. It was very hard for her to call me then and tell me that they found 2 of their youngest alpacas with their necks ripped out one morning. 🥲 They locked them in the barn every night after that and eventually sold their herd to someone else. The point is predator threats are real around here and it only takes one event to cause unthinkable damage. So we employ these amazing dogs and are grateful for them every day.
Photo of the Day: i believe whoever left these prints is what keeps the pups busy at night. Any footprint experts?
Juno loves to bark! Look at my big girl who is not even 6 months old yet. ❤️

At first I thought it might be a big cat — cougar or lynx — but their tracks tend to be more wide set, two across. This looks more like wolf tracks. It’s hard to tell what size they are without something to give it scale.
Linda
Thanks Kim. I think deer tracks were going across the big prints to give it scale. I might put my trail cam out there to see if I cacth any movement tonight.

I thought those might be deer! In that case I think it could be a wolf!
Linda
Yikes!

What a beautiful action shot of Juno! She is a wonderful deterrent to whatever it is out there! Are there wolves around where you live? We have Eastern Coyotes, which have wolf genes in them, but we seldom hear them. Dogs barking seems to work for them. Sad story about your nearby farm.
Linda
Thanks, Lana. I know we have cougars, bears, coyotes and too many stray dogs. I’ve heard reports of wolves from shepherds in the nearby mountains, although sightings are rare. Whatever it is, I’m glad we have 2 big dogs warning them not to come here!
