Wednesday, January 19, 2022 The relationship between a livestock guardian dog and alpacas is fascinating to me. It’s always different with each different dog because each dog comes with their own experience and personality. Juno has been more cautious than most because her mom trained her to be wary of the goats they lived with. Smart mom, and good girl Juno for paying attention to that lesson. Goats can head butt a puppy into next week! Alpacas are mostly afraid of dogs though a few bold ones might try to stomp their feet to scare them. Slow and supervised introductions are so important. Yesterday baby Ruthie helped Juno understand the sweet and curious side of alpacas. So glad I was there to see it and capture it. They came nose to nose a few times, Juno put her paw up playfully and both Ruthie and Juno had a good experience. #farmmagic
Also for those who have asked, Juno is not a full Great Pyrenees like Blue. Her mom is a Pyrenees and her dad is a Maremma. Maremmas are the livestock guardian dogs from Italy, like the Pyrenees are originally from France. There are many breeds of LGDs, they are most often white to blend in with flocks of sheep. Our vet thought Chief was part Kuvasz which originally came from Hungary. I’ve heard wonderful things about Maremmas and am very happy to have this breed here in Juno.
