Wednesday, November 10, 2021 Rain and snow kept the alpacas in their barns last night but they’re out wandering nibbling on exposed grass this morning. Cold wet weather can be hard on them early in the season and they’re smart enough to seek shelter. But here’s the thing – if the shelter is too small, they won’t go in – or if there is only one “man size” entry – a dominant alpaca will often choose to lie there blocking any more from coming in. Both our barns have 12 foot openings for them to get in and out with plenty of space to move around once they get inside. When I hear of alpacas who stay out in the rain I ofen wonder if they really would prefer to be under shelter. Stay dry stay warm wherever you are.

I love his color! I’m going to order yarn from his fleece when you have it.

Thanks Sunny. It’s in the online store! 😁

Oh boy, we found out early on, that one man-sized exit could be blocked. The matriarch laid in front of it, so the rest of the girls wouldn’t pass her. Dick finally built another door that led them to the field in the back. Why they didn’t realize they could go out the front and go around, is beyond me, but they didn’t. The second door fixed the problem. Alpacas are so funny!! (Part of their charm)

Aren’t they though? We used to keep the alpacas in smaller groups in smaller paddocks and there would always be one who would block the entrance if they could. The big 12 foot door makes me chilly when I’m out there, but it works well to allow alpaca traffic. I’ll close it down a bit when it gets super cold in a few months.
