Alpaca playtime?

Saturday, October 30, 2021  Our visitors are often disappointed that alpacas are not cuddly like puppies. Except for our Scarlett of course who loves people and their hugs. I’m so glad we have Scarlett to let people experience alpaca hugs, but she is a very unusual creature who learned respect as well as an affection for people. But it doesn’t always work out that way. I like to teach the alpacas to respect people for everyone’s safety. Have you ever seen alpacas playing with each other? They’ll run and butt chests or nip at ankles and personally I don’t like to play that way. The Berserk Male Syndrome is another post for another day, I’m referring to alpacas in general, females included. If your alpaca thinks of you as another alpaca you will eventually be disappointed in the way they treat you. It took a few face plants for me to totally get this many years ago! Cuddly puppies are at the shelter or a rescue if you need that sort of thing. Alpacas are amazing livestock that do best playing with each other, not with their human friends.
