Wednesday, August 11, 2021 Our private farm tour ended with more chaos than I like yesterday afternoon. I was in Yaya’s Yarn Barn writing up receipts for our guests’ purchases and Ed came in and said, “Come quick, all the boys are with the girls!!” Whaaaat??? No time to figure out HOW that happened, grab halters and leads and lets get the boys off the girls ASAP. Of course they went into breeding mode within 10 seconds. Almost every male had picked a female and it was that massive orgy I refer to when I explain to visitors why the males are kept separate from the females! The geldings forgot they were gelded, the young boys each had a girl under them and even tiny little Remy was giving one of the girls his best shot. ugh. One by one we haltered the “busy” boys and got them back where they belonged; we took care of Romulus and Stetson first since they could have created a pregnancy, next was our Mojo who is still intact, then the four 2 year olds and finally the confused geldings. I didn’t see any of the boys in the proper position so I’m hoping we escaped any pregnancies. I’ll be checking. Two of our guests stayed and helped with the final round up.
Now how did that gate get opened? We did have our visitors right there as we ended the tour but I did NOT open the gate for this tour. Sometime we do go in with the boys, this time we were having more fun watching the babies by the creek. It’s a very heavy chain to lift, so although I first thought one of the boys might have lifted it out of it’s slot, I don’t think that’s possible after I locked things up last night. The last “Breakout” we had was 20 years ago and since then we always have a buffer zone between the girls and boys with all of our fencing. The area where the boys got out is next to the creek and we only have the girls there for tours and then they are moved back to other pastures. I guess it will remain a mystery but I promise you it will never happen again. Have you ever tried to get a breeding male off his chosen female? Over and over and over? Let me tell you it ain’t easy. Those boys are strong and very determined! I felt like I had been wrestling with grizzly bears as I got in bed last night. I’m ready for an easy peasy Wednesday!
Photo of the Day: Babies had their first day at the beach right before the chaos.

Oh geez! I can’t imagine how difficult that was!! Glad nobody was hurt! More babies? Yikes.
Linda
No babies are planned for next year, I really think we stopped the action in time, but I’ll be checking.
Lana
Oh no! Our worst nightmare. We had it happen about 6 years ago and didn’t catch it in time to stop pregnancies. Thankfully there was a way to medically stop it and we only got one cria out of it. Luckily, her Daddy was one of our best males and it wasn’t the mother’s brother as we had feared!! Too funny about the geldings!!
Linda
I do have a bottle of Estrumate here if needed, but I really think we got things under control before any thing happened. Fingers crossed!!

OMG! on a lighter note…beautiful picture of the babies…ALL TOGETHER. Also, do you think Romulus knows he has lots of kids?
Linda
Thanks Jill. I do think Romulus knows and he prefers to hang out with his sons!

Oh my! Your story made my day, Linda. Glad everything worked out.
Linda
It was pretty intense for a while. I’m glad Ed was here to help!

Ok, first of all, I cannot imagine the terror you must have felt as you were running towards the pasture and the strength it took for you guys to remove those naughty boys. But that is the funniest story I have read in at least a week! LMBO!!
Linda
And if you know me you know I am NOT a runner! Funny what some adrenaline can do to an old body!
