Monday, July 19, 2021 We have a baby! Ava started labor about 9 am yesterday morning and had delivered her baby by 10:15. And our alpaca lovin’ grandson got to see the whole thing. The whole event consumed every minute of our day, with the heat, the puppy (Blue) and the extremely curious herd who hadn’t seen a baby in a while. My goal was as always to get mom and baby safely with the herd before nightfall. Mom’s job is to make milk and she will make her best milk when she’s not stressed. To keep her away from the herd would be to stress her. So we made careful slow introductions throughout the day and we were successful in having Ava and baby safely back with the herd by nightfall. Our biggest helper was Charlotte. I’ve never seen her do this before but she appointed herself the baby’s personal guardian. She charged at Blue if he came too close and even pushed a few of the other alpacas away. I appreciated her diligence especially as I headed to bed!
Oh yes, the particulars. It’s a light fawn boy, he is tiny, just like Remy was, weighing in as 12.2 pounds. Dad is our Stetson. Nursing well and waiting for a playmate! No name yet, we are all having fun with this part.
Happy Monday!
Photo of the Day: Still wet baby enjoying a bit of shade under mom while we wait for the placenta.
Instant love here.
Best sight ever!!!
Every one is squinting in the sun but I loved this shot of our grandson helping Blue learn to be calm around the baby.
He has his own personal guardian. Thank you Charlotte.

Yesterday I lost my first alpaca in 15 years. It was a pretty boy only 11 of age. I witness his birth and his death as well. I lost my boy, but you were blessed with one on the same day. Congratulations on your pretty miracle! Enjoy him!
Linda
Oh Louise I am so sorry for your loss. I know that hurt too well.

What a cutie patootie! Love his ears curved back, but I know they will straighten out. Since we no longer have crias, I’m living vicariously through you.. Is Charlotte related to Ava?
Linda
Those ears, right? They always straighten out so I don’t mess with them, just enjoy the baby look. 🙂 Charlotte is the livestock guardian dog. She’s been totally amazing protecting this baby.
Lana
Oh, I thought that was Blue! Good dog!
