Tuesday, July 13, 2021 I got an unexpected email this weekend from my hay grower. About a month ago he told me he would be fertilizing his fields and expected to have plenty of hay. He wanted to make sure that I wanted my normal amount. I confirmed with him and we were expecting delivery this week. In the email he told me because of insufficient water he does not have any hay for me. Zip, nada, nothing. I have been searching and contacting every grower I know and I’m hearing the same thing.
To help you relate, imagine you have a house full of cats and you just heard of a nationwide cat food shortage and in your grocery store is not a single can of cat food available for you. This is the kind of sinking feeling I’m dealing with.
I will find hay, but I will probably have to pay 3 times what I had budgeted. And we will continue to pray for rain. If you know of local hay sources, please share! Thanks.
Photo of the Day: Luckily there is still pasture available here for the alpacas to eat. These are the 4 tweeners enjoying one of their new pastures yesterday.

Praying for rain right along with you….I wish I could divert all the rain we are getting in Playa Las Lajas, Panama right now – it rains every day right now.

Thanks Sunny.

Linda, I am checking with a couple of friends to see who they get their hay from and if I can get any names and numbers for you I will.
Linda
Thanks Michelle!

Oh man, I know how scary that is!!! Before we got our July rain, I was running that scenario through my head and thinking, ‘can we feed hay stretcher pellets by the pallet?’ I hope you can find some hay. Our second cutting in September has been saved with the rain this month. Glad you have pasture for now. Crossed fingers and toes that you get rain and find hay. You are right about the price. Even our regular supplier has just notified us that the bales are going up in price from $7.50 a square bale to $9.00. BTW, I do have a houseful of cats and got a taste of a shortage during covid, when all the flavors they preferred were scarce. Dogs got lots of cat food when the picky eaters disdained my choice of alternatives…

Thanks Lana. Finding good hay is always a concern. I thought we were covered this year so this has been a wake up call.
