Wednesday, January 6, 2021 Although it’s not my word of the year, I like the word “Adaptable” and it will be a theme for the farm this year I think. Doing things the way we’re used to doing things doesn’t work any more. We had to come up with an adaption to accommodate little Remy last fall. We’ve always introduced the one year old boys to the bigger boys just fine and they become part of the bachelor herd before winter tarps go up. Remy (in the middle of the photo below) changed all that for us. He is just too tiny to handle the “rough housing” from the bigger males and the few times he was with the group he was at the bottom of a big pile of orgling male alpacas. Not safe at all and I just won’t allow that to happen.
So we did put up the clear tarps, you can see how nice the sun (and warmth) comes in. But we had to fence an extra area for the little guys to get out where they have access to an entire pasture next to the bigger boys. Also in the photo, you might see a big white tail (lower right corner) that belongs to Blue of course. Lincoln on the left demonstrates how the big boys can share a hay feeder with the little guys safely. It all works because we were willing to adapt. Lucky Remy!
May we all find obstacles as ways to be more adaptable. Stay well~
Photo of the Day: L to R. Lincoln’s head, Ryder, Remy, Rocky in back and Roman the biggest tweener of all. Oh and Blue’s tail.
