Sunday January 5, 2020 Every morning when I write my blog post, I can see what search terms helped people find this site. One of the most frequent searches is “Do alpacas sleep standing up?” and “When do alpacas sleep?” So I’ll give you my opinion on that. No they don’t sleep standing up. They cush and fold their legs up underneath themselves and occasionally lie their heads on the ground too. When do alpacas sleep? When they feel safe. And they feel safest in the presence of other alpacas. They all slow down at night to rest, but it seems to me the best actual sleeping is done when at least one other alpaca is very close by. It’s almost like they have an understanding – “Hey friend. Watch over me for a bit. I really need to get some good sleep. I’ll do the same for you tomorrow” Our house was built so that we could see what the alpacas are doing all day, and if I’m really concerned I can even watch them on the cam at night, so I do have a pretty good idea when they do that deep sleeping. Our herd is pretty non-stressed here so they do get that good sleep when they need it. And each alpaca has plenty of alpaca friends to count on when they need them. One more reason to be sure alpaca s are always n a herd.
Photo of the day: Beautiful sunrise this morning and all the alpacas are still resting in the barns. Some might even be sleeping.:
