Tuesday July 23, 2019 Where do these alpacas give birth? Pretty much wherever they want to. I do not confine them or separate them from the herd as the end of the pregnancy approaches. Of course it would make it lots easier for me, but in the big scheme of things, the more they are left to their own natural ways, the less likely we’ll have problems so maybe this way is actually easier for me too. Some of them like to be by themselves, some of the newer moms like to have relatives around. How would I even know this if I confined them? But I have learned to trust that they know what to do, and they will allow me to help if I am needed. Which means I rarely leave here in birthing season. After the birth, I will separate mom and baby about 85% of the time to give them a chance to bond and for baby to get it’s legs working. Some moms will spit ant any thing that comes near that baby and are so protective that I can leave them with the herd, but that is not the norm. We have had a few give birth right in front of the alpaca cam! So keep watching, ya never know.
Photo of the day: Piper picked a quiet spot in the north pasture to give birth, and her baby was up and nursing before the herd noticed there was a new addition. (photo from a few years ago)This birth had the whole herd as participants. lol
