Tuesday June 25, 2019 I learned many years ago what the #1 killer of alpacas is. It’s not a parasite, not an illness and not old age. It is stress. Stress opens the door for all those previously mentioned maladies to grab an other wise healthy alpaca and take it down. But if an alpaca feels safe and does not deal with stress, they have an amazing ability to fight off illness, parasites and more. So our policy is to allow zero stress for the animals at Blue Moon Ranch. This is one reason why they are not confined in paddocks, they can give birth where they choose to and when visitors come, the idea is we visit them in their home and abide by their rules. No chasing, no grabbing and no posing for selfies unless they choose to. And a few of them often choose to! We don’t take them to shows, we don’t rent out our alpacas and we like to think they have a pretty rich life right here. Eliminate stress, eat right and you probably won’t get sick, Guess what? It’s good advice for people too. 🙂

I totally agree! You guys are providing the best environment for these animals and in return you get the best! It even shows in the dogs!

I am totally in agreement with your philosophy! We don’t have a large farm with only 11 alpacas but we offer them a peaceful existence with visits from their doggie and cat palls (yes we have a very old and very sweet Walker Treeing Hound) she loves to lay alongside the fence and hob nob with her pals. We also have a huge white cat, Captain Jack Sparrow, who sits on the fence and holds court every once in a while. I don’t believe in separating the females who are giving birth either. The mom’s seem much more relaxed with the herd around. I think our ‘pacas are very happy animals. They’re friendly and even have a good relationship with the two little girls who come and visit them and help me. We don’t do shows or fairs either. We welcome visitors but we don’t tolerate any nonsense.
