Wednesday February 27, 2019 I am often asked if alpacas (or more frequently llamas) can be used as guardians. My answer has always been the same …NO. Hey, if you ask for my opinion that is what you’ll get. 😉 I am aware that there are people who use llamas as guardian for sheep, goats and chickens etc. And some folks use llamas to guard alpacas. But if your predator has canine teeth, you are asking that llama or alpaca to fight a very unfair battle. I read earlier this week that SIX llamas were KILLED by a canine attack in Louisville Kentucky. You can search google for the grisly details. Rare isolated incident? I’m afraid not. Grass eating animals CANNOT defend against meat eating animals. Period. Yes it does make me upset. There are animals who are bred specifically for the purpose of defending livestock. They are called livestock guardian dogs! So if you have livestock that needs protection that is what you need. Not a big bold llama, in my humble opinion. I’m grateful every day for the 3 guardians we have protecting our herd day and night at Blue Moon Ranch.
