Tuesday February 12, 2019 The barn is in deep doo, if you know what I mean. We started “deep bedding” a few months ago and it’s in full swing now. What that means is we stop trying to move the “beans” out and just cover them with straw or leftover hay each night. The pluses are many: #1, it’s labor saving, #2, my cart or tractor would surely be stuck in the snow if I might attempt to move a load to the composting area. #3 we have a head start on the composting as the 2 main ingredients of healthy compost are manure and straw or hay. #4 it crates a little bit of warmth as it composts right inside the barn, and #5 after I spread the dry layer on top, it gives the animals a warm cushy place to sleep at night. When I see 5 more days of snow in the forecast, I’m glad this is our winter bedding method. 🙂
