Tuesday January 29. 2019 To our friends in the Midwest bracing for this Polar Vortex – Stay safe! I know of alpaca owners who are going out every 2 hours day and night to bring their animals warmed water, keeping them locked in shelters and praying. Heavy straw bedding, at least 6 inches deep, coats and extra rations of hay are the only other things I’d try. A human’s down vest can be put on an alpaca with their front legs through the arms and zipped over their back. I’ve also heard of wrapping their body in bubble wrap and duct tape in extreme cold. It’s only 12 degrees here this morning, but that seems so mild compared to what is going to blast Midwest farms. The forecast for NIU, my alma mater in DeKalb Illinois is 60 below zero for Wednesday morning! I can’t even imagine. Hoping for the best for people and animals~
Photo of the day: Feeding birds is critical in winter too, no matter where you are. We always keep several feeders filled for our feathered friends.
