Thursday November 9, 2018 One of the questions I hear often is “where do they sleep?”, referring to the alpacas of course. The answer is “wherever they want to”. Because we have the dogs to protect them at night, they can sleep wherever they feel most safe. And if you are an alpaca, feeling safe is like your #1 priority. So although it’s 10° outside this morning, many of the alpacas are out and away from the barn, with a dog of course sleeping in the middle of them. Many are closer to the barn in the bedding of leftover hay and a few will be inside the barn, but not many. When a storm comes, they will all seek the shelter of the barn and on the very coldest nights, most will be in there. Safety in numbers is also how they think, so if the majority decide that being inside the barn is a good idea, they will most likely agree. The only exception might be if a mom has a newborn and she decides it’s “safest” to be out in a storm, I will overrule and bring them inside.
