Thursday October 18, 2018 As the hours of daylight are shrinking, the alpacas know that winter is coming. And some how they know they will need extra Vitamin D. And they even know how to solve this problem! They rest with their underside facing the sun so they can absorb as much Vit D from the sun as possible through the less fiber covered area on their bellies and armpits. They store it in their livers and it gets them through the darkest months. They do this all year long, but I notice it more in the fall. Such smart critters. We occasionally supplement with additional Vit D, but at this altitude it’s not as necessary as it would be a lower elevations.
