Monday July 9, 2018 So 2 of our pregnant mamas are past their alleged due date by about 3 weeks. It’s one of the mysteries of alpacas that they can have such a wide window of acceptable time for delivering their babies. It just happens. But one of the first questions the breeder needs to ask is “Is she really pregnant?” They have miscarriages just like people do and even when you are sure she was pregnant, she might have slipped the pregnancy. This can be confirmed by seeing fetal movement (yes we have) and often, but not alway the size of her belly. Ultrasounds are often misleading at this late stage. The first year we had alpacas (way back in the 1900’s lol) we were told 5 of our females were pregnant. Only 3 actually were, but it was a good learning experience for me! Allegra below is obviously growing a nice big cria in there, and hopefully we’ll see it soon!
