It’s time for winter bedding

Friday, November 13, 2015  Today I’ll clean the barn out and over the weekend the plan is to get it ready for winter bedding. What that means is I resign myself to the fact that they poop in the barn and I simply cover it up with leftover hay or straw each night. It starts to decompose over the winter, and makes warm bedding in the process. I saved a few bales of marginal quality hay from last year to start the process. There is no smell and it saves an enormous amount of labor in daily clean ups. It’s one of the best ideas we have here I think! Happy Friday!

What are the options to do with straw and alpaca poop mixed together? What possibilities is there to use it for?

Poop and straw mixed together will eventually break down into beautiful black compost. Turning it and keeping it slightly moist will accelerate the process, but it will happen eventually if you wait long enough.
